SEO+SMO= Getting Found Online

SEO- Search engine optimization (SEO) is the practice of positioning your website or blog high in the organic search results.

There are two main elements involved in SEO:
1 ‘On Page’ elements
2 ‘Off Page’ elements

‘On Page’ elements

- the way the site is coded (Google loves WordPress!)
- how much content is on there
- how frequently new content is added
- the keywords that you are using and where they are placed

Step 1 in optimizing your website
-create a list of 10-15 keyword phrases
-start with your own gut feelings
-use Google Adwords ‘Keyword Tool’ to expand that list and get a sense of the traffic volume and competitiveness
-cull your list to 10-15 keywords

Step 2 in optimizing your website
Optimize the existing content on your site and continually add new content that relates to your target keywords.

On Site Optimization Tips and Tricks
1. Target one keyword phrase per page or post (except on the home page)
2. Include that keyword phrase in the following places:
-in the title of the page/post (69 characters including spaces)
-in the URL for the page/post
-in the first two sentences
-in one other place in the body of the post

‘Off Page’ elements

It’s all about building inbound LINKS

Site A links to Site B= Site A “voting” for Site B

WARNING! THE BLACKLIST: ARE YOU ON IT?

Leave it to the professionals. Google does not like it when you artificially build links. And some link building tricks will get you blacklisted (kicked out of Google index)

Do it Yourselfers (link building)
1. Guest blogging
2. Blog commenting
3. Directories (DMOZ, Yahoo’s Directory, Business.com…)
4. Article Directories (ezinearticles, GoArticles)
5. Link Bait (great content that people want to link to)

Not all links are created equal, according to Google

What makes for a good link
1. Authority
2. Relevance
3. Anchor text
4. Outbound links
